The previous academic year was extended by six months due to two extended breaks of three months each, which caused much hardship in terms of funding. The new academic year began in June,2026 and interviews were held for MBBS students entering Years 1 and 2. Four new MBBS, (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) Scholarships were awarded.

A decision was taken not to provide any new scholarships for students undertaking their Bachelor of Dental Surgery, (BDS), due to concerns about the current financial stability of this recently introduced course and the fact that KUHeS are undertaking a double intake of students this academic year. AMECA will review the situation next year, to ascertain if clinical placements are being adequately managed. AMECA also feels that the charity should monitor the availability of government posts for dental graduates, as there are currently no Ministry of Health jobs available for the cohort of young dentists who have completed their internship.

As can be seen from the chart below of graduated students, AMECA is now focussed on the provision of scholarships for Medical and Dental students. The rationale behind this decision is not only to support the paucity of qualified dentists and doctors in Malawi, but also to lend support to undergraduate students with no prior qualifications and therefore no other income.
