In March of this year, Southern Malawi was hit by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which has been recorded as one of the strongest storms to hit the Southern Hemisphere. Over 2.2 million people were affected, with nearly 660,000 people displaced. There were at least 700 recorded deaths, over 2,000 injuries and more than 500 people remain missing. The cyclone caused significant disruption to housing, agriculture, food security, transport, education, health, water and sanitation. At the time of the cyclone, Malawi’s communities were already suffering from a cholera epidemic.
