The AMECA Healthcare Clinic at Chilaweni

Dedicated to the memory of Alex

Since opening on May 8th 2017, the AMECA Health Centre currently serves 38,000 people in 23 villages. It sees on average, 4,000 outpatients each month; these communities had no prior access to any accessible healthcare facilities.
Construction was undertaken by S R Nicholas and the buildings rapidly began to take shape.
The foundation stone for the AMECA Clinic were laid by Dr. Peter Kumpalume, Hon. Minister of Health on 3 May 2016 at Chilaweni Village on 3rd May.

AMECA brought mains electricity to the village and a solar powered bore hole to ensure the continuous supply of water to the clinic and staff housing. With the aid of funding from Saint Andrews International School in Blantyre, we also bought an ambulance.

The project was completed on time and within budget, exactly one year from the start of construction and the facility was officially opened by the Honorable Minister of Health.

Following the construction of a Maternity Unit,

the facility was upgraded from a Healthcare Clinic to a Health Centre because in addition to the provision of outpatient primary healthcare, a dispensary, and an expanded immunisation programme, (EPI), maternity services are now available. Physiotherapy services commenced in January 2023.
