Government tertiary hosp; main teaching hospital for University of Malawi College of Medicine. This is a relatively huge complex, located in central Blantyre, within a short walking distance of the College of Medicine. It acts as the referral hospital from all districts surrounding Blantyre.
The hospital contains all the major departments one might see in any tertiary facility, although both equipment and supplies are often in serious shortage. There are 3 general theatres, 1 orthopaedic theatre, 2 Obs & Gynae theatres, 2 ophthalmology theatres, a burns/plastics theatre, 2 emergency/trauma theatres, a 4 bed ICU unit and CT/MRI and standard X ray facilities.
All specialists needed and welcomed. Opportunity for teaching post-graduates and undergraduates. Elective students welcome including nursing and physiotherapy and should apply through the Dean of undergraduate studies.

hree months is optimal for learning the local and hospital culture and being most effective, but length of stay will largely depend on the visitor. Will welcome shorter stay but at least 4 weeks is helpful.
